
Lancaster Catholic High School added four new members to its Athletic Hall of Honor on October 2, 2009. The inductees were introduced during halftime at Catholic’s football game against Lampeter Strasburg. Prior to the game, they were honored in Berger Gymnasium at the high school.
The inductees:
Mike Dipaolo (Class of 1974) was a three-year letter winner in football and track. In football he played running back and linebacker. His senior year he was named a team co-captain, Tri-County Football League All Star, and 3rd Team AP All State. In track he participated in the hurdles. His sophomore year he finished 2nd in the 180 yard hurdles at the PCIAA State Championship Meet. His junior year he set a standing 10 year record for the 300 yard hurdles.
Mike was also a four-year letter winner in wrestling. His freshman year, wrestling at 133lbs., he finished third at the Pennsylvania Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association State Wrestling Meet. As a junior and wrestling at 155lbs he placed third in the L-L League Championship Wrestling Meet. Senior year he was co-captain of his wrestling team, and received the Lawrence Berger Award as the top student/athlete at LCHS. He lives in Stroudsburg, PA.
Walt Legenstein (Class of 1965) was a three-year letter winner in football, track, and wrestling. In football he played halfback and defensive back. In track he completed the mile run. In wrestling, his senior year, he qualified for the Pennsylvania Catholic Inter Scholastic State Wrestling Championships which he won in overtime with a 10-9 decision.
In 2008, he received the J. Freeland Chryst Sports Achievement Award given to local athletes/coaches recognizing athletic excellence and service to the community. He lives in Lancaster, PA.
Carol (Kreider) Wagman (Class of 1967) was a four-year letter winner in basketball and softball. Carol played the rover position and had the distinction and honor of being the first girls basketball player in school history to letter all four years, and being the MVP her senior year. In softball, she played outfield and shortstop.
After high school, she attended Shippensburg State College where she again lettered all four years, and received MVP her senior season. After college she started the girl’s basketball and volleyball program at Dover Area High School. Her career carried her to the girl’s CYO team at St. Rose of Lima School in York, and she also started a volleyball program. She coached the basketball team for eight seasons and the volleyball team for six. She currently lives in York.
Norm Bell (Class of 1955) was a letter winner in football and basketball. He played both offensive and defensive end in football. His junior year he was named Central Penn Catholic League Football All Star. In basketball he started for two years, and was a forward. His senior year, Norm received a football scholarship from Franklin and Marshall College where he was again a three-year letter winner and two-year starter playing offensive and defensive end.
In the 1970’s he served as president of the Lancaster Catholic High School Athletic Association, and coached youth football in the St. Joseph’s Midget Football Program. He currently resides in Lancaster.
